Meet our new staff:

Sheri Morse, Children's and Family - Creative Arts Coordinator

What brought you to Mariners?
My family loves Mariners. We came here for the children’s program, and the 5:00 service. That was 7 years ago! And of course fell in love with Kenton’s messages.

Favorite hobby?
I love spending time outside. From the ocean to the mountains I love walking and enjoying the beauty of the outdoors. I love animals and enjoy our walks with the dogs.

Favorite cartoon character?
I do not really have one but Garfield always makes my smile.

If you were to perform in the circus, what would you do?
That’s a hard one… I think I would work with the lions.

Favorite Christmas memory?
After opening presents one Christmas, we all decided to get into our cars and drive to the family house in the mountains. My sister and her family, my folks and us had the best few days in the snow just being a family. The snow was perfect and the game nights were a hit with the kids.

Jonah Haase, Latin America Coordinator

What brought you to Mariners?
After the Peace Corps I moved here from Wisconsin and began the search for a new church.  My brother (a non-believer) recommended Mariners Church because a while back he crashed his bike in front of the church and several people came over to help him.  A week later in the Worship Center I stood up said, “I believe” for the first time.

Favorite hobbies?
Training Clydesdales with my dad. Euchre.  Here in CA: Zumba and line dancing.

If you could visit any place in the world, where would you choose to go and why?
Rome – I am a huge history buff.

Tell us about a unique or quirky habit of yours.
I collect machetes. Bigger the better.

What is your favorite weird food combination?
Cheese in cereal.  Num num

Jon Armstrong, Tech Arts

What brought you to Mariners?
I was invited by a friend back in 2003 and just keep going to different ministries

Favorite hobby?
Taking things apart and putting them back together.

If you could only use one gadget for the rest of your life, which one would you choose?
Iphone, I've yet to find something it can't do.

Desktop wallpaper on your computer?
It switched between the Golden Gate bridge at sundown and downtown LA at night.

Where are you from?
Irvine

What do you like best about your hometown?
That I'm moving to Costa Mesa.

Leadership Development is for everyone...#247

Love vs Fear

Some motivate by fear. Fear brings anxiety, panic, apprehensive behavior and a slew of other side effects that steal the joy of service. Fear may get things done, but the cost far outweighs the benefit and can result in broken hearts, shallow relationships, and empty performance.

Some motivate by love. Love produces a secure environment that produces attractive qualities such as passion, fervor, affection and respect. Love gets things done and the benefit is deep and lasting. Love creates a heart that strives for excellence.

Jesus chose love…

“God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them. And as we live in God, our love grows more perfect. So we will not be afraid on the day of judgment, but we can face him with confidence because we live like Jesus here in this world.  Such love has no fear, because perfect love expels all fear. If we are afraid, it is for fear of punishment, and this shows that we have not fully experienced his perfect love.  We love each other because he loved us first.” I John 4:16-19

Love chose us…

It is the same motivating love of Jesus that selected each of us as leaders to serve. We are not always easy to work with, and often our stubborn disposition is rebellious and unwilling to bend a knee to the Lord who saved us. But our loving Lord is committed to love us in spite of our tough exterior. He softens our hearts to become the leaders designed for His service.

Who do you choose?

The best leader I work with is the hardest for me to work alongside of most of the time. I feel he is making me pull the wagon up hill. He doesn’t breathe kindness or a gentle attitude. He is hard and disconnected and often “sucks the air” right out of the room… Come to think of it, he is sometimes just like me. Yet, I pick him and he picks me. Not because it is easy, but because we love each other.

Don’t always pick the easy-to-love kind of leader to serve alongside of you. Sometimes we need to pick the hard-to-love. Jesus did pick John, but he also picked Peter and Paul. The outspoken Peter and the stubborn Paul balanced the team in some mysterious fashion. A team of all easy-to-love John’s would have tipped the boat. That is good news for the tough-to-love kind of leader. You may discover (as I have over the years) that a hard-to-love kind of leader is just what I needed. Have you picked a tough leader to love yet?

Fellow-Pilgrim,

Gene Molway

Romans 12:7 “…If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously.”
